Floods in Mozambique: Local Organizations on the Front Lines of the Response
Floods caused by heavy rains since January 2026 have already affected around 600,000 people, and could reach 800,000, with Gaza province accounting for about 75% of the affected population (HNRP Addendum 2026).
National and local organizations, through the Mozambique Local Humanitarian Coordination Platform (MLHCP), are responding as first responders, supporting displaced communities in areas such as WASH, protection, food security, and community support, even in contexts of limited access and damaged infrastructure.
During the recent visit to Gaza Province, the importance of strengthening local leadership and humanitarian coordination was reinforced, ensuring that the response is closer to the communities, effective, and aligned with real needs.
The MLHCP reaffirms its appeal for solidarity and support for local organizations, which are essential to saving lives today and building resilience tomorrow.
